The Bettye E. Tunstall Scholarship
Bettye Ellen Tunstall was born on March 28, 1927 in Baltimore, Maryland. She was the mother of three boys, Edward Ewing, Charles, and Vernon Tunstall. Bettye epitomized hard work, dedication, leadership, and entrepreneurship. Educated in the Baltimore City Public School System, Mrs. Bettye had many accomplishments. In 1967, she opened her own Beauty Parlor, L'Bet's, on Westwood Avenue in Baltimore. She was a bartender at the legendary Sphinx Club, a members-only nightclub that was the place to see and be seen for Black Baltimore for decades. She was a well-known seamstress who designed clothing for her friends, family, and community. She worked for Pollack-Blum's Furniture store for many years, where she retired. In the late 80's, she became the caretaker of her three granddaughters, Arnel, Kapriel, and Lariel Tunstall, due to the drug epidemic that swept through Baltimore City. Mrs. Bettye understood the importance of gaining skills to become a productive citizen.
